Three people were killed in an accident involving a van and a car at Mahavita in Yakkala this morning, Police Spokesman Prishantha Jayakody told Ada Derana. He added that the collision had happened at 5am and that there was a woman among those killed.

A lady doctor who was on a family trip to the Peessa waterfall in Lunugala was badly injured when she fell from a 40-foot cliff into a crevice while she was posing for photographs being taken by her husband. 

Dr. Malisha Mallawarachchi (30) was serving at the Nikaweratiya Hospital and had gone on this outing accompanied by her doctor husband, their child and parents.

Attempts by  family members and villagers to rescue her failed and the Lunugala police and members of the Badulla Municipal Council life saving unit had finally rescued her after about two hours.

The lady doctor was rushed to the Badulla General Hospital.
