The historical cricket match between Veddas and film stars
Cricket is a gentleman game and it was founded by Englishman. But today cricket
is very popular among our test playing countries. Sri Lanka also famous with
cricket after they won the world cup in 1996 under the leadership of Arjuna
Ranathunga.
However this is going to be very unusual story about our adiwasi Veddas(
ancient Sri Lankans) cricket in action at the Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala
on last Sunday (May 22). Kurunegala National Thelassimia Center was organized
this exhibition match at Kurunegala famous Welagedera Stadium . Veddas team (the
ancient time Sri Lankans ) was wearing their traditional kit to play cricket and
most of the spectators were around the ground to see this match against Sri
Lankan popular film stars.
Mahendra Perera, Buddhika Jayaratna, Roshan Ravindra , Buddhika Lokuketiya,
Rosy Roma, Lakshika Fonseka , Teddy Vidyalankara, Kumara Ranapura, Chula Mendis
were in the film stars team while Uruwarige Bandiyalaettho(deputy leader of the
Adivasi Vedda's party)Uruwarige Mandiyalaettho ,Uruwarige Dhanushka, Uruwarige
Sameera and few other Veddas cricketers were present to play this match.
Finally Veddas team beat Film Star team to get the victory and Uruwarige
Dhanushaka was adjudged the man of the tournament with his perforamces . However
both Veddas team members and film starts team members were spend some time with
Thelassimia children at the Kurunegala to remark this historical match which was
organized well with the support of Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club . (Pankaja) |
