Sri Lanka’s first fully fledged National Performing Arts Theatre in Colombo will come into operation on the 15th of this month. The Arts and Theater complex, titled “Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theater” will be declared open by the President. The foundation stone was laid for this project by the President on the 23rd May 2008. President’s Advisor Ravindra Randeniya said the Chinese government has granted three billion rupees for this project. At a press briefing held in Colombo yesterday he said opening of this fully refurbished theatre complex is a dream of Sri Lankan artistes coming into reality. Presidential advisor Dr. Rohana Weerasinghe said Sri Lanka’s first international concert hall is the realization of a dream of Sri Lankan artists. He added that a group of artistes are presently undergoing training to perform a ballet at the inauguration ceremony. This display symbolizes Sri Lanka China relationships. The ballet is being directed by Veteran tele drama and film director Jayantha Chandrasiri following the one hour performance, a Chinese dancing group will present a music opera. Artiste Jackson Anthony says the conference hall is a long delayed arrival of spring time to the Sri Lankan drama artistes. Secretary to the ministry of media and information W.B.Ganegala said with the opening of the Mahinda Rajapakse concert hall , it will become Sri Lanka’s national centre for art performances. |
